Questions around Scholarships
Many students wonder about scholarships. See some common questions around athletic scholarships.
Athletic Scholarships
1. How many scholarships are given out in each Division?
In the following graph you see a breakdown of how many scholarships are available across every sport in each division, but keep in mind that many of these sports offer equivalency scholarships- meaning a full ride scholarship can be split amongst athletes giving them all a partial scholarship.
2. How much scholarship money does an athlete get on average?
This is an average amount of scholarship student-athletes receive in each division per year. It may seem like students in Division I receive larger scholarships, but this is usually because many Division I schools have very high tuition fees, and they generally have much larger athletic budgets.
3. Does every player on a team have an athletic scholarship?
Since the statistics show only 2% of high school athletes get a college scholarship, it may seem like a very small number of athletes receive scholarships. However, only 6.7% of high school athletes even make it to the college level. Which shows us that most athletes who are good enough to play in college will get some form of college scholarship. Roughly 59% of Division I athletes, and 62% of Division II athletes, receive some form of athletic scholarship.
4. Do Ivy league schools offer athletics scholarships?
Unfortunately, Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships. The motto of these schools is that they don’t offer scholarships based on athletic talent, but rather offer financial aid based on the students financial need. However, student-athletes at Ivy league schools will still be financially supported in terms of gear and resources for their sport.
5. Are athletic scholarships given for all 4 years of college?
Scholarship commitments can vary by school, but in general they are designed to be renewable each year as long as the student-athlete abides by certain criteria. Schools will have different standards, but they typically expect students to remain in a full course load and maintain a minimum gpa to remain eligible for scholarship awards. Some colleges will promise your scholarship award for all 4 years of college, however they are still allowed to revoke it if at any point if the athlete quits playing or stops showing up to practice.
6. Can athletic scholarships be taken away?
Generally speaking, a student-athlete would need to do something wrong to have their athletic scholarship taken away. Schools won’t revoke scholarships for underperformance or injury, but they certainly could revoke them if an athlete stops going to class or practice.
