The NCAA governs 24 different sport programs, however not every sport is represented in the university system in the US. There may be a few sports international athletes partake in, such as handball or men’s rugby, that isn’t recognized.
There are three different college divisions. The NCAA Division 1, 2 and 3 with over 1200 members. The NAIA for small schools and the NJCAA for community colleges.
College sports have a very unique status in the USA. In contrast to many other countries, sports are often played in high school teams and then continued at the college level.
Life as a student-athlete comes with many challenges, and can be very competitive. However it is also very rewarding, and can prepare you for a very successful future.
Going to college and becoming a student-athlete is the dream for many high-school students in the United States, but also for many students around the world. Students seek the chance to receive a great education while continuing to pursue the sport they love.
